Artificial intelligence (AI) agents promise to make everyday tasks easier, but Uber's latest figures suggest that customers aren't exactly rushing to let them take the wheel.

During Halloween week, AI agents booked just four Uber rides and placed 500 Uber Eats orders, despite the company processing approximately 320 million trips and orders across its platforms.

That's quite a reality check for the growing enthusiasm surrounding autonomous AI assistants.

TL;DR

  • Uber revealed that AI agents booked only four rides and placed 500 Uber Eats orders during Halloween week.
  • The company processed approximately 320 million combined trips and orders during the same period.
  • CEO Dara Khosrowshahi acknowledged limited adoption but remains optimistic about AI agents becoming another way for customers to access Uber's services.

Uber's Earnings Call Reveals Extremely Low AI-Agent Booking Activity

During Uber's November 4 third-quarter earnings call, Chief Financial Officer Balaji Krishnamurthy revealed some surprising figures about the adoption of AI agents.

As reported following the earnings call, the company processed approximately 320 million rides and food delivery orders during Halloween week, making it its busiest week in October.

However, the number of transactions initiated through personal AI agents was remarkably small.

Although AI-powered food ordering registered greater activity than ride bookings, neither service showed meaningful adoption compared with Uber's overall transaction volume.

The disclosure came alongside Uber's official third-quarter 2026 results, providing an interesting contrast between the company's established business and the emerging technology expected to automate consumer transactions.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said, "It is very, very early and very limited traction that we are seeing so far."

Nevertheless, Uber isn't abandoning the idea.

Uber's 50-Second Ride Bookings Challenge AI Agents' Convenience Advantage

One possible explanation for the lack of adoption comes down to something surprisingly simple: booking a ride is already quick.

According to Khosrowshahi, customers typically spend around 50 seconds booking an Uber ride through the company's app. Reordering their favorite food takes approximately 90 seconds.

With both tasks taking less than two minutes, using an AI assistant to complete them might not offer a significant time-saving advantage.

That's an interesting challenge for a technology designed to remove repetitive tasks and simplify digital experiences.

Uber isn't alone in witnessing limited adoption.

DoorDash reportedly disclosed during its earnings call the previous week that it had received only a few hundred orders through AI agents, with most customers continuing to use its own application.

The figures suggest that, despite growing interest in automated shopping and booking, consumers have yet to make AI assistants their preferred way of completing everyday transactions.

Uber Expects AI Assistants To Become Another Way To Access Its Platform

Despite the underwhelming numbers, Khosrowshahi believes AI agents could eventually generate additional demand for Uber.

Rather than viewing them as competitors to its applications, Uber sees AI assistants as another channel through which customers could access its ride-hailing and delivery services.

Khosrowshahi estimated that approximately eight major AI assistants are currently available, with the number potentially exceeding ten over time.

He also indicated that companies developing AI systems are already engaging with Uber, suggesting that the ride-hailing platform is keeping its options open as the technology develops.

Interestingly, Uber has also introduced an AI-powered Cart Assistant within Uber Eats, although that in-app shopping feature is distinct from customers using personal AI agents to place orders.

The broader concept of agentic commerce involves AI systems handling transactions on users' behalf. However, Uber's disclosure shows that consumer adoption remains far behind the technology's ambitions.

Uber's AI-Agent Numbers Highlight The Gap Between Hype And Consumer Adoption

Uber's disclosure raises an important question for AI developers: how much value can an autonomous assistant offer when an existing application already completes the job in seconds?

While AI agents could eventually become another entry point for ride-hailing and food delivery, the company's latest figures show that such transactions have barely gained traction among customers.

For now, the technology has plenty of promise, but convincing people to delegate something as simple as booking an Uber remains an entirely different challenge.
