Is AI Going To Replace Apps?

Hello readers, Think about the last time you ordered dinner. Open the app. Search for a restaurant. Scroll through the options. Pick a dish. Add it to your cart. Check out. DoorDash is testing what happens when almost all of that disappears. Its new AI-powered ordering experience lets users describe what they want through a conversation, while AI helps find restaurants, remember preferences, build the order, and move them closer to checkout. That may sound like another convenient AI feature, but there is a bigger shift hiding underneath it. For years, apps have been how we interact with technology. Now, AI is starting to sit between us and those apps. Airbnb wants travelers to describe the trip they want instead of working through endless filters. Google is changing which Gemini models users can access for free. Reddit, meanwhile, is moving in the opposite direction by tightening access to its content and APIs. Beyond AI, other familiar systems are being challenged too. European payment networks are joining forces against Visa and Mastercard. Then there is Joby, whose self-piloting aircraft has taken autonomy well beyond the screen and into the sky. Technology is not disappearing. The layers between us and what we want it to do might be. Let’s dive in. |
